Technology can be very helpful to victims of domestic violence, however it is important to also consider how technology might be misused by an abusive partner to stalk them.  If you suspect that someone is monitoring your computer activity, you may want to consider using a computer at a safer location such as the library.

If you are concerned that an abuser may find out that you have visited this website please follow the steps below to delete your browsing history:

Internet Explorer

1. Make the following sequence of menu choices:

Tools -> Options -> Internet Options -> General

2. Click “Delete Files,” then “OK.”

3. Click “Delete Cookies,” then “OK.”

4. Click “Clear History,” then “Yes.”

Internet Explorer may also remember your form entries for you, which can result in past searches appearing in a drop-down box when typing in keywords on your favorite search engine. To erase this information, follow this sequence of menu choices:

Tools -> Internet Options -> Content -> AutoComplete -> Clear Forms

You can also clear the “Forms” check box to prevent the program from trying to recall your form selections for you in the future.

Safari

Clear the entire history list:

  1. Open Safari if it is not already open.
  2. Choose History > Clear History, and then click Clear.

To clear Top Sites as well as your history list, select “Also reset Top Sites.” The Top Sites page is based on your browsing history.

Clearing your history also empties caches, removes website icons, and clears the list of recent searches. Website icons are small graphics that help identify sites on the Internet. You see them in the address and search field, the bookmarks list, and other places. You can see your recent searches by clicking the magnifying glass at the left end of the address and search field when it’s empty.

Clear individual items from the history list:

  1. Open Safari if it is not already open.
  2. Click the open-book icon in the bookmarks bar.Bookmark list button
  3. Click History in the Collections list on the left.
  4. Select the items you want to clear in the list of bookmarks on the right, and then press the Delete key.If you can’t see the list of bookmarks on the right because Cover Flow view is covering it, drag up on the handle below the Cover Flow scroll bar.

Firefox

  1. At the top of the Firefox window, click the Firefox button, go over to the History menu and select Clear Recent History….
    For Windows XP: At the top of the Firefox window, click the Tools menu and select Clear Recent History….

  2. Select how much history you want to clear:
    • Click the drop-down menu next to Time range to clear to choose how much of your history Firefox will clear.

  3. Finally, click the Clear Now button and the window will close and the items you’ve selected will be cleared.

Google Chrome

  1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Tools.
  3. Select Clear browsing data.
  4. In the dialog that appears, select the “Clear browsing history” checkbox.
  5. Use the menu at the top to select the amount of data you want to delete. Select beginning of time to clear your entire browsing history.
  6. Click Clear browsing data.

The following information is removed when you clear your browsing history:

  • Web addresses you’ve visited, listed on the History page
  • Cached text of pages you’ve visited
  • Snapshots of your most frequently visited pages on the New Tab page
  • Any IP addresses pre-fetched from pages you’ve visited
